One of the hardest realities that is definitive of the transition from childhood into adulthood is the realization that love, no matter how strong, is not enough. Love does not conquer all.

The secondary reality (precipitating the first), is that relationships are hard. Getting to know all the parts of someone takes emotional vulnerability, patience, understanding, and a hell of a lot of trust. Being with someone through the good and the bad, the ups and the downs; through strength and weakness is no easy feat. The worst of a person can be pretty bad. And it will leave a bitter taste in your mouth and wider, longer lasting ripples in your relationship then a great moment. You have to have the fortitude to withstand this, to accept this, and to overcome this. You have to be so committed to your relationship that even when you feel like you don't love someone, let alone like them, you trust that with time and nourishment that love will return.

So people who say that love conquers all and that relationships should be easy are living with a beautiful, albeit completely unrealistic, childish fantasy.
