Pretty Woman
"It's easier to believe the bad than the good."
-Pretty Woman
Why is it so much easier to believe the bad we hear about ourselves rather than accepting the good. Those little comments that people make that hurt so much just infiltrate the mind and poison your self image. They taint your complete self-concept. You accept less for yourself, you start to hide dreams and bury expectations... you perform less well because that is what you see yourself as, then poor performance only reiterates that you are less than you thought you once were. It becomes this destructive cycle that changes you slowly, little by little... until you look in the mirror and the image is no longer the same as you remember.
It gets to the point that when you hear people tell you good things about yourself you wonder what their motive is. It doesn't occur to you that they may be genuine, that their words may be true, and their intentions are pure. They may just see a glimmer of what you once saw in yourself. And then it shakes you, it makes you wonder who you are, what's inside of you. Maybe there is magic in me, maybe a light waiting to burst through my fingertips. Maybe there is something special and unique in me. Maybe the truth is...
I am great.
